In 2001 a group of friends started Blue Monday, to play a one-off gig at an open stage concert. This proved such a success that they decided to continue playing. In the years that followed Blue Monday toured the country for an impressive array of gigs. One of the highlights was a concert with “Modern Day Blues Queen” Dede Priest. The band also went abroad for a concert in Ireland.
After 20 years drummer Leon Toonen and guitar player Jan Luppes took their leave. However, new musicians joined their ranks and present day Blue Monday consists of singer Alex van Gelder who also plays the harmonica, Sjarl Kuyltjes on guitar, John Jansen on bass, René Grijsbach on keyboard and Wim Veldkamp on drums. This new line up played for the first time at the Zyfflich bluesfestival in 2019.
By now, Blue Monday has the reputation of a formidable blues band that speaks to a broad audience. The band loves to push the boundaries of their genre resulting in a varied and exciting set list. Not just any blues band, but an evening of great music by excellent musicians. Blue Monday: keeping the blues alive!
